I have had a Dachshund in my life since I was a very little boy. My first was a Red German Standard named Puddles. He was my best friend and confedant. We brought him home from Germany where my father was stationed in the Army in 1963. Funny enough, we had the very same birthday right down to the day and year. I lost puddles when I was 15. My wife, Sheri and I began rescueing them around 1987. From that point on we have rescued 7 total. We now have 3, and can't think of a better dog to have. We invite you to join us on our BLOGand tell us about your Dachy's.

Dachshund Origin

The name "dachshund" is of German origin and literally means "badger dog", from Dachs ("badger") and Hund ("dog"). The pronunciation varies widely in English: variations of the first and second syllables include /ˈdɑːks-/, /ˈdæks-/, /ˈdæʃ-/ and /-hʊnt/, /-hʊnd/, /-ənd/. In German it is pronounced [ˈdakshʊnt].[3] Because of their long, narrow build, they are often nicknamed hot dog, wiener dog or sausage dog. Although "dachshund" is a German word, in modern German they are more commonly known by the name Dackel; in the case of the formally certified hunting and tracking rank, the name Teckel is used.

Dachshunds have to be one of the most friendly, loving, playful dogs ever.  I have had a Dachshund in my life  for as long as I remember.  My first Dachsy was “Puddles”.  He was my friend and comrade.  We were born on the same day in the same year.  Puddles was a brown  German Standard Long Haired, he was about 3 feet long and weighed about 30 pounds when he died at 15 years. We have rescued 5 Dachshunds over the last 10 years.  It started with Ziggy, a Black/Silver Double Dapple with China blue eyes, Dexter, a grumpy but sweet miniature Long Haired. We have three now, Verdie a Black Standard  Rudy a brown Standard Longhaired and Spanky a Black and Tan  dapple miniature Longhaired.

Meet “Buddy”

Buddy came to us the way our other Dachshunds did, via rescue.   Only with one horrible twist.  My wife and I had been rescuing Dachshunds for about seven years, when one day a friend told us about a little Dachsy that was going to given up.   She told us of a lady that did not have a fence, so she could not keep him.  Rather than taking him to a shelter, the lady said that if someone didn’t take him, she was going to dump and kill him.  Well  there was no way the we were  going to let this happen. We took one look at him and he looked at us. “Go ahead and look  in those eyes”.  He got ya, huh?  Well we took him in with the goal to find him a home.  We did, ours.  Buddy was my oldest sons dog, they ran together, sat together, well heck they did everything together.  Buddy came down with a form of cancer that we fought for months. He had three surgeries, but it didn’t work.  We had to put  him down last year.  He was truly our  “Buddy”
